Before starting any work everything has to be protected like the floors will be covered with heavy-duty plastic or construction paper and plastic will be used in any furniture, doors, windows, trim, etc., if needed a curtain of plastic can be used to block the dust from going outside the work area like in a leaving room or a kitchen, always trying to contain the dust as much as possible.
The Popcorn Ceiling will be sprayed with water and then it will be scraped.
After the Popcorn Removal the ceiling has to be skim-coated ( apply a layer of drywall compound to the entire ceiling, let it dry and sand it ), this step is needed because the drywall will be damaged when the scraping is done. The drywall joints and screws always need more drywall compound to completely hide them and erase the seam and with this layer of drywall compound all this imperfections will be fixed and the ceiling will be ready for a new texture.
The new texture will be done, we can do the Skip Trowel Texture which is the most popular drywall texture here in the Mountain area in 2023, we can match the walls or if you want a different drywall texture we can do it too.
If the new texture used is the Skip Trowel Texture after is dry it needs to be sanded to erase rough and uneven spots and make it flatter, after a couple days it will be ready for primer and paint.
If the new texture is something like an Orange Peel or Knock Down they only need a couple of days to dry and they will be ready for Primer and Paint.
If you want us to do the Primer and Paint we can do it too.
Once the work is finished all the protection that was used on the floors and walls will be removed and the area will be cleaned.

If the ceilings have not been painted a lot of times and the popcorn ceiling surface is not like rubber the easiest way will be to spray a little bit of water on them, wait for around 10 minutes and if the popcorn texture is soft enough scrape it with a scraper with a long handle or drywall knife.
All the furniture, carpet, floors and walls in the work area will need to be protected since this is one of the dirtiest works that is done in occupied or finished properties.
And depending on the size of the ceilings this will remain like this for a few days.
The cheapest way to remove the popcorn ceiling will be to cover everything on your property directly below the ceilings that will be scraped and then spray a little bit of water on them to soften the texture and then do all the scraping and the rest of the work.
Sometimes this is not possible, for example when the popcorn texture has been painted so many times that the surface is like a piece of rubber, in this case the next cheapest option will be to skim coat (cover the surface with drywall compound) the ceiling a couple times, let it dry and then do a new drywall texture on top, the result is the same but since is a little more labor involved is a little more expensive but can be done.
Absolutely, popcorn ceiling scraping is one of the dirtiest work that we do, there will be wet popcorn texture falling to the floor and everywhere so we always make sure that everything is protected like the walls, floor and furniture, doors, windows, trim, etc.

Yes we can install new drywall on top of the Popcorn Texture but this will be more expensive because more labor is needed to install the new drywall and finishing around the corners where the new drywall meets the walls.
This will include work on top of the walls where they meet the new drywall and paint will be needed in these areas too.
Sometimes is not possible in places that are fully furnished because is dangerous to be installing heavy pieces of drywall around your furniture and take care of the walls, furniture and stuff at the same time so is better if we do it in a few cases like:
If you are interested in getting better sound control between floors adding a layer of new drywall or even better a layer of the sound control drywall will help better than scraping the popcorn ceiling and then do the texture on the old drywall.
If you have a lot of repairs in the popcorn ceiling it will be easier to ad a layer of new drywall instead of fixing a lot of drywall patches before doing the new texture.
You can clearly see that the ceiling is way out of level and have like waves that form over time from the drywall bending with its own weight, in this case a new layer of drywall can be used to make the ceiling more straight.
Is not recommended, more work is always needed once the Popcorn Removal is done since after the popcorn ceiling scraping it will be left with a lot of scrapes, loose paper, etc. and the screws and drywall joints always need more drywall compound to completely hide them.
When the popcorn texture was first done the drywallers did not spend a lot of time coating the screws and drywall joints to do the texture since the popcorn is so tick that it was not needed because the texture will cover and hide everything.
But now that a new thinner texture is wanted all the work that was not done before has to be corrected.
Priming and painting without doing all of this will result in the ceiling looking really bad, the paint will not only not hide all of this but it will make it more apparent the places where is a smooth ceiling and the scratches and joints that needed more work.
After we scrape the popcorn ceiling we always spend time fixing all the scrapes, joints, places where the drywall paper was not installed correctly, etc. and then we do the drywall texture of your choice.
Is recommended that nobody use the Kitchen or Bedroom or any area where popcorn texture removal is being done because everything will be protected with plastic and if you have to remove the protection to use the place every day what is going to happen is that these places are going to be covered with dust.
And if every day before we start working we have to use more time to protect the same areas again and again an extra charge will have to be made for this time.
If you have a Bedroom or an area where there is not going to be Popcorn removal you can stay there.
The place is going to look like a construction zone and is not recommended to sleep or stay for long periods of time in an area that is going to have work done.
